Pink Brandywine Tomatoes
The Brandywine tomato is perhaps the most famous of all the heirloom tomatoes in the world. These huge pink maters are said to be one of the best tasting tomatoes on the planet. Brandywine tomatoes either originated from the Pennsylvania Dutch Amish or were a commercial offering by the Burpee Seed Company in the late 1880's. Whatever the origin, Brandywine tomatoes are wonderful tomatoes to grow. They are indeterminent potato leafed plants meaning they will grow tall, up to 7', and have leaves that are wider than the average tomato plant much like the leaves on a potato plant. They produce fruit from 85 to 90 days after transplanting and continue until frost. Buy seedlings after all threat of frost is gone or start your own under lights 8 weeks before your last frost. Transplant seedlings into the garden in the evening or a cloudy day to keep them from getting sunburn. Dress each hole with a handful of compost and a table spoon of epsom salts and water well. These tomatoes need support and will get far too big for tomato cages. I use metal "T" posts for support and tie them up with bailing twine. The fruits are big and pink and tend to be mishapened but don't judge a fruit by its' shape because the taste is rarely second to none. These maters are juicy with a wonderful acidic sweet flavor that is sought after by tomato connesseiurs |
